Driving across Idaho and Utah is fascinating. I’ve long been drawn to the desert, ever since I stood in Morocco and saw the Sahara. The feeling was similar to the awe I feel whenever I see the ocean.
One of my favorite bands, the Taureg band Tinariwen, is from the desert, and many of the books I read, both fiction and non-fiction, have desert settings, including ‘The Seven Pillars of Wisdom,’ the stunning autobiography of Lawrence of Arabia (no relation), and anything by the excellent Libyan author Ibrahim Al-Koni. I even rewrote a section of the enthralling ‘Thousand Nights and a Night’ for the spring 2014 issue of Parabola magazine.
